Facing Table Topics Fear
Following our discussion a couple of weeks ago on Table Topics, the main points that came out were:
- Turbine Toastmasters are nervous and fearful of what the topic is going to be;
- Need to have more light-hearted topics and let people have an easy knowledge of the topic. Have sensible topics that anyone can relate to;
- Create a positive environment with a warm, friendly audience;
- Start with the experienced speakers;
- Choose those with no other speaking roles that night first;
- Everyone to be positive and supportive, and to enjoy table topics.
To assist with the process the following is information on how to:

Local Toastmaster achieves top Toastmasters award
On 15 March 2005 Brooklyn’s Turbine Talkers Toastmasters club, celebrated Steve Bullock’s recent achievement in gaining his Distinguished Toastmaster award. Thirty people attended the function, where the award was presented by District Governor (ie National President) Colin Perfect. The Distinguished Toastmaster award is the highest award conferred by Toastmasters International to individual Toastmasters members.
After seeing an advertisement in a local paper, Steve joined Toastmasters in October 1996. At that time Steve was a very shy person. The Toastmasters programme has transformed him from ‘three is a crowd’ to speaking to audiences of up to 200 people at Toastmasters functions. Toastmasters has also helped Steve with job interviews and to further his career.
In earning his Distinguished Toastmaster award, Steve has presented close
to 50 prepared speeches, as well as mentoring new Toastmasters members,
conducting Speech craft courses and building new clubs. He is currently
Division E Governor leading a team of eight Area Governors which looks
after the 42 clubs in the Wellington and Wairarapa regions.
Joy Ackrill, Turbine Talkers President, said she was thrilled to see Steve receive his DTM. ‘Steve was the first President of Turbine Talkers. He started his Toastmasters career with this club and has set an example for others. This award represents a significant "milestone".
Turbine Talkers is a fast growing club which helps people develop communication skills and leadership abilities. It meets every second Tuesday from 7.30-9.30pm in St Matthews Church Lounge, 96 Washington Ave, Brooklyn.
