In March, July, October, May
The Ides fall on the 15th day.
The nones the seventh; all besides
Have two days less than nones and ides.
What on earth does this all mean?
The verse is a way for us to determine on what dates of each month the nones and ides fall.
Referring to the ancient Roman calendar, there were three days in every month that were recognized. These days tended to follow the phases of the moon.
- Kalends = always the first day of every month. From this we have the modern word “calender”.
- Nones = 5th or 7th day
- Ides = 13th or 15th day.
In modern times we are more familiar with the reference to the “Ides of March” but still not many can tell you what it means. This was the date (March 15) in 44BC that the Roman Emperor , Julius Caesar, was murdered.
The date was also used infamously by William Shakespeare in his play “Julius Caesar”, when Caesar was infamously warned by a soothsayer with the words “Beware the Ides of March !”
