About Us

Turbine Talkers Toastmasters Club chartered in March 1997. Our charter number is 6879. Initially we met at the Brooklyn Community Centre, then moved to the Brooklyn Resource Centre. Currently the club meets at St Matthew's Church Lounge.

Previous Presidents

Our previous Presidents are Steve Bullock (1997-98), Bettina Nisbet-Schempf (1998-99), Chris Rabey (1999-2000), Gillian Woodward (2000-01), Hori Henare-Tamihana (2001-02), Carolyn Raven (2002-03), Robyn Mackay (2003-04), Joy Ackrill (2004-05), James Stonehouse (2005-06), Robyn Mackay (2006),Carol Murray-Brown(2006-2007) and Joanne Conchie(2007-2008). Caro Raven is the current president.

Turbine Talkers Toastmasters Club 6879: Club Aims

  • To allow new members the opportunity to deliver their first speech within two meetings of their joining
  • To give every member the opportunity to deliver a speech at least every eight weeks
  • To give every member the opportunity to carry out each of the meeting roles
  • To schedule an educational at least every third meeting
  • To give everyone the opportunity to speak at Table Topics if not delivering a speech. (Chair to act as backup to ensure this happens)
  • To have a guest speaker every third meeting (educational, GE etc)
  • To have three social events per year
  • To have a quarterly newsletter.

Turbine Talkers Toastmasters Club 6879: Core Values

Aim: To improve the communication and leadership skills of our members via mutual support.

Goals:

  • to be set annually after consultation with the membership
  • to be published annually for the club
  • club will follow the Distinguished Club Program

Meetings:

  • friendly and welcoming nature of the club to be preserved
  • meetings to start and finish on time and be a maximum of two hours
  • everyone to have the opportunity to speak at every meeting
  • members are to follow the schedule set or find their own replacement
  • educational sessions to be a regular part of the program
  • leadership opportunities to be provided for all members

Speeches:

  • speeches to be based on manual assignments
  • speeches must keep to time
  • each meeting is to have a mix of basic and advanced speech assignments
  • guest evaluators and speakers to be invited regularly

Committee:

  • committee members are committed to attend officer training
  • committee is to consult membership about aims and goals
  • committee members to support District activities

Publicity:

  • achievements of members to be recognised
  • club bulletins to be produced quarterly

Members:

  • all guests to be welcomed
  • regular contact to be maintained with all members
  • club is to have continuous membership building
  • mentors to be allocated to all new members
  • members agree to abide by club core values

Records:

  • club records to be correctly maintained
  • dues to be paid on time
